The Artist Behind the Work

About Nathan Garcia

Nathan Garcia is a queer contemporary artist based in Gilbert, Arizona studying Photography at ASU Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts. His practice resides in alternative portraiture, ranging in digital work to darkroom abstract printing processes. In tandem with photography, he is also studying ceramic and anatomy sculpture. His ceramic work is inspired by organic life and shapes. Although he is fairly new to anatomy sculpture, he plans to create work inspired by his own photography. Conceptually, his work involves themes of lived experiences such as identity, mental illness, and interpersonal relationships. Aesthetically, he is inspired by artists such as Joel Peter Witkin, Arrayah Loynd, Annie Lebovitz, and Robert Mapplethorpe. Nathan considers himself "an artist first, and a photographer or sculpture second", as he is constantly seeking ways to create, and embark in new mediums, experimenting with alternative processes in his work.
